Terms: Iron Horse and Sluice Run: Iron Horse: The invention of coal and steam powered locomotives replaced horse drawn wagons to expedite the transport of goods across the plains. They were dubbed “Iron Horses”.
Sluice Run: During the Black Hills Gold Rush of the 1870’s miners ored the gold and washed it down gullies by the way of a water channel controlled by a gate called a sluice.
